MIRI: The Sarawak Forestry Department (JHS) becomes the country’s first government agency to use a state-of-the-art aerial system with the launch of the Sarawak Aerial Detection Unit (Sadu).

Mounted on a DA42-MPP light aircraft, Sadu, which is flown by a special technical working team led by Unit Leader Dr Affendi Suhaili, will provide aerial geospatial data services based on hyperspectral technology to monitor and manage the state’s natural resources.

Besides aerial law enforcement missions and natural resource management, Sadu can also be used to collect geospatial information on natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, surveillance of national borders and others. missions in collaboration with various government agencies in the country.

“This is in line with the vision and mission of creating a world-class civil service in the technology sector required for the state government digital government initiative,” said the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, after the launch of the unit.

He said Sadu was established in 2008 as a system application and development unit with the main role of developing a hyperspectral and geospatial system based on the technology used for research activities by the JHS.

Using the advanced technology he had developed, Sadu was commissioned by the state government to help combat illegal logging activities in Sarawak in 2014 using aerial surveillance.

This became the starting point for Sadu to move on to the next phase of his role, based on the expertise and experience of the unit.

“In the 11th Malaysian Plan (2016-2020), Sadu received an allocation from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources for the creation of a system capable of performing aerial mapping and surveillance missions.

“The implementation of the project saw the sharing of assets, expertise and development resources across the country,” he said.

“The project involved the development of a specially designed air system that uses equipment for missions requiring monitoring and mapping of natural resource areas,” said Abang Johari.

Over time, the department has trained a skilled workforce and set up a special technical work team that can develop the technology for air missions related to operational aspects, as well as the production of end-user information. and air systems operating skills. – Bernama
