By Benjamin Fleurs: This week, the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM) commended the Forestry Department for issuing a “cease and desist” order from a logging concession that was issued to a private land owner.

SATIIM notes that the concession that the Director General of Forests issued the Private Forest Permit No .: PFP # 13/21 on May 21, in violation of the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process , described in the consent order of the Caribbean Court of Justice in 2015. The organization noted that the applicant also did not have the required support from the majority of the villagers.

SATIIM noted yesterday that following a meeting with its leaders, the commissioner for indigenous affairs and the villagers concerned, the department had decided to issue the stop order.

“SATIIM, which provides technical support to Creek Sarco, commends the Belize Forestry Department (BFD) for issuing a“ cease and desist ”order on all operations with this particular concession. SATIIM sees the Forestry Department as an important stakeholder and intends to work with the Department to raise awareness of consent ordinance and FPIC, ”SATIIM said.
